Belles Of The American Royal

BOTAR

In 1949, ten men and women of vision and leadership created a legacy that has lasted more than half a century. That year, twelve young women were invited to be presented at the American Royal Coronation Pageant and Ball in Municipal Auditorium. They were to be known as the Belles of the American Royal, and after waltzing at the Ball, they served as hostesses at American Royal events.

Thus began a tradition of support for the American Royal Livestock, Horse Show and Rodeo that has flourished ever since. Soon their name was shortened to BOTAR, and in 1959, the group's alumnae formed their own organization. In 1970, sponsorship of the Ball passed from the American Royal to the BOTAR Organization. Over the years, many outstanding young women and their families have been honored at one of Kansas City's oldest and most distinctive formal occasions.

The BOTAR Ball, profitable from its first year, has become one of the premier fund-raisers for the American Royal, including the Charitable Foundation Trust and the Scholarship Fund.

In addition to raising funds for the American Royal, BOTAR is committed to its growth and development. BOTAR sponsors educational events at the Royal such as the Kids Ag Learning Fest and livestock judging as a well as a series of American Royal graduate courses for teachers through Baker University. BOTAR is very involved in the activities during the Royal, from sponsoring livestock and horse show classes to awarding the BOTAR Challenge Trophy at BOTAR Night at the Royal.

One of the most significant contributions that BOTARs have made to the American Royal is in the planning and development of the American Royal Museum and Visitors Center. BOTARs annually conduct tours of the museum and guide groups of school children through the complex. BOTAR has given the museum an interactive equine exhibit titled "Horses in Motion" as a celebration of the Royal's centennial year.
