BOTAR
Our Beginnings
In the spring of 1949, Senator Harry Darby gathered a group of visionary community leaders whose common passion was the American Royal, the country's largest horse and livestock show and a legendary Kansas City event. The purpose of the gathering was to find a way to celebrate the Royal's 50th anniversary, and also to interest and engage young people in its promotion.
That year, twelve young women whose families had contributed civically or culturally to Kansas City were invited to be presented at the Coronation Pageant and Ball held in Municipal Auditorium. They were to be known as the Belles of the American Royal, and after waltzing at the Ball, they served as hostesses at American Royal events.
Thus began a tradition of support for the American Royal Livestock, Horse Show and Rodeo that has flourished for sixty years. Soon our name was shortened to BOTAR, and in 1959, the group's 204 alumnae formed their own organization; 60 years later the Belles are over 1,200 members strong.
BOTAR is a not-for-profit organization that provides both financial and volunteer support to the American Royal. The organization's annual financial contribution supports the educational programs, scholarships, and events at the Royal, and BOTARs volunteer their time annually to help with the Museum, Parade, School Tours, and educational programs such as KALF Days, REACH, and Reading Roundup. Since 2000, BOTAR has contributed over one million dollars raised through such endeavors as the annual BOTAR Ball and Tablescapes.
